Artist Statement
In my own experience, I’ve come to the realization that we, as people, tend to connect better with things that portray emotions, invoke an inward feeling within ourselves. Whether that be through landscapes or portraits, sepia or black and white, staged or natural photos, it’s a known fact that we are all connected by our emotions, and this is exactly what I wanted to heavily portray within my images.
I’m a very emotional person, and I wanted to convey that through the use of dark, grainy effects within my photographs. In every image, I brought the exposure down and added a touch of grain in order to give them a moody look that gives them a sense of mystery and makes you want to learn more about the subject.
Peter McKinnon is one of my favorite photographers and I took just a small hint of inspiration from the effects and colors he uses within his images in order to create something unique that conveys a sense of raw emotion. I tried to play around with focal length, as we used earlier in the semester, as well to create a sense of depth within my images and strongly focus on the subject in which I was trying to capture so as to draw from the colors and add more to the emotions I was attempting to showcase.
