Exhibit Statement
Distill the human story down to its essence and it might be explained simply as a conflict between neighbors. Christ answered the question, “Who is my neighbor?” by telling a story about an otherwise unworthy person, the “other,” who plays the hero by saving the life of a mugging victim left for dead. That unworthy person, the “other” in his story, is who we call the “Good Samaritan.” Digging deeper, one might ask: Sometimes our neighbor is the “other” – and so how do we love them well? In what ways are individuals, communities and nations to grapple with such difficult questions as dealing with the “other?” What do artists have to say about these facets of the human condition? Can art play a role in building bridges towards our neighbor?
To answer these questions and others like them, Asbury University’s Art + Design Department joins the College of Communication Arts Theatre Department, and the 2025 Asbury University Embrace Conference to offer a juried art exhibit to deal with the theme of race, justice, and reconciliation. The exhibit will coincide with related events on Asbury’s campus in the Fall of 2025. Asbury’s annual Embrace Conference focuses on racial reconciliation and justice through a Wesleyan theological understanding. Sponsored each year by the Office of Intercultural Affairs, the conference is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to come together and learn from scholars and practitioners in the field.
The Art + Design Department seeks artwork along the themes of loving and extending hospitality to those we consider “other,” for consideration in the forthcoming exhibit, I Can See Your House from Here. This exhibit, showing November 20, 2025 –February 6, 2026 on Asbury’s campus, will feature artwork by students (past and present) of Asbury University. Subject matter is open; however, the art must clearly contribute to or give a unique and appropriate perspective on the theme of the exhibit. All media will be considered.

Work will be considered based on quality of execution, and connection to exhibit theme, as determined by Jury. Any work deemed inappropriate for a wide audience will not be considered. Jury decisions are final.
