Fully Known
Art can transcend our intentions. There is magic in honesty – in the words of Lisa Gungor, “creating unafraid of what vulnerability might cost us.” The art in this room is based on my most vulnerable experience: being part of a campus community that holds a traditional theological view of relationships as a student who is not heteronormative.
“Fully Known” is simply a visual representation of my story. The color blue represents me. Yellow, orange, pink, and green represent others who have been part of my story (both positively and negatively). Inspired by the work of artists such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Gregg Bordowitz, the work in this room is driven by vulnerability and visual metaphor.
“Fully Known” is about seeing each other. It’s about connection, love, and humanity. It’s about the experience of finding myself, losing myself, and finding myself again, all while immersed in a context saturated with opinions on my existence. It’s about craning my neck – turning my ear to the Father, trying to hear Him above the noise. It’s about having my heart forced open, then realizing I’m better off that way – we need more people with open hearts.
Author Colby Martin says, “If you want to connect with others, truly connect, then you have to become known.” I offer you a visual narrative of my story – vulnerable, honest, fully known.
