He Answered Me
by Anna Renaud.
Here, floating in space, are my questions and conversations. Many of these were asked out of shame, insecurity, misunderstanding, and feelings of unworthiness. I didn’t know if I would get answers or hear anything from God in response, but I asked anyway. These words are a glimpse into my mind and heart, but they aren’t the whole story. It has taken time and waiting, but answers have come. The answers aren’t always what we want or expect, but they are there. So when all you see is the swirling mass of questions and unanswered prayers, know that there is hope.
Flowers forma picture of that hope. Even in their small size and delicate dried state, flowers bring joy and beauty. Each one was collected and cared for and each one plays a part in the larger picture of this show. Over the years and throughout this process, I’ve learned that as we spend time in conversation with God, he teaches us more about himself and our understanding grows. He doesn’t expect us to have it all figured out or come to him already perfect, he just wants us to come to him.
Screen printing has become a picture of this imperfection. The complicated process not only gives me time to think and contemplate the work, but each print comes out slightly different and no one is ever perfect. I was able to make these designs digitally, with quick manipulation and fixes, but eventually had to slow down and meticulously mix colors, coat and burn screens, align paper, and pull ink for each print. Artists like Rebecca Louise Law, who creates stunning floral installation, and Laurie Hastings, who makes intricate screen prints, have greatly inspired my work. I was especially inspired by Law’s use of copper wire to suspend flowers in many of her exhibits. These artists, along with many poets and psalmists, have helped me to discover new ways of communicating and expressing fears, frustrations, and joys.
I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me.
    He freed me from all my fears.
Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy;
    no shadow of shame will darken their faces.
In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened;
    he saved me from all my troubles.
For the angel of the Lord is a guard;
    he surrounds and defends all who fear him.

Psalm 34:4-7
