Glimpses
by Leah Hampton

For Glimpses, I interviewed several friends and acquaintances asking them about a time
they felt most seen or known. Some talked about an uncomfortable experience, others
a time when they finally felt appreciated for their unique gifts.
For each of these stories, I asked for a color associated with that memory. I have chosen
to incorporate the colors they shared into their specific likeness, in an attempt at a
visual representation of being truly seen. When thinking about these individuals, I
folded into the design what I knew about them, the qualities I saw and admired, and
whatever glimpse I had into their world.
The photographic portion seen in each face represents what we understand of a person
from the outside, what we see from a limited view. The colors I’ve added become what
makes up that person; little pieces of who they are—what we see, and maybe do not
see.
Glimpses is a reflection of a wondering, a playful experimentation into the minds of
other people. These images are meant to be more abstract than representational,
mixing bright, colorful elements with a deeper mystery of identity. Inspired by the
vibrant, colorful work of graphic designers such as Petra Erikson and Tyler Spangler, I
chose to mix photography and illustration in order to express some of these mysteries
as they relate to these individuals’ exteriors.
Through this work, I hope to share and express a deep desire to know and explore the
great mystery of understanding others. But I believe it is a good reminder to rest in the
knowledge that we are all fully known by the one who created us, who has more than
just a glimpse into every part of who we are.
